(CHANDLER, AZ)— Fulton Brock, the 12-year incumbent County Supervisor in District 1, recently distributed a mail piece that includes false and misleading attacks about his challenger, Ed Hermes. Hermes mailed a certified letter and later hand delivered the same letter to Brock on September 25th, refuting his misleading attacks, which first appeared in anonymous blog posts. In his last contested election, Brock also distributed a mailpiece with misleading, false attacks, and was forced to settle for $20,000 after being sued for defamation of character.
In an earlier attack on Hermes, Brock claimed that he lived with his parents. As Hermes told Brock later in his hand-delivered letter, Hermes doesn't. Brock still repeated the accusation later in his mailer, just as he did with debunked attacks against his last opponent, Bob Edens.
Brock's mud-slinging mailer frequently cites internet blogs as if they were credible sources. It even includes one puzzling citation listed as "Hermes' biographical information" without naming any source at all. "Fulton Brock continues to try to tear down his opponent's character with misleading attacks and faulty sources rather than focusing on the issues facing the county," said Devin Mauney, Campaign Manager for Hermes for Supervisor.
Brock further mislead voters by purporting that Hermes avoided court appearances, when in fact photo radar tickets, and subsequent summons, were sent to the wrong addresses. Hermes is in perfect standing with the law, and all traffic citations have been paid or dismissed.
"Brock forgot to mention Ed's experience as the Director of External Affairs at the Arizona Department of Agriculture, his work on the Governor's Smart Growth Cabinet, and his teaching at Highland High School as an Agricultural Economics instructor," said Mauney.
