FactCheck.org, a nonpartisan watchdog group at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center, says an ad that last ran weekend in Arizona and other states made "false claims" regarding the actions of U.S. House members including Reps. Gabrielle Giffords and Harry Mitchell.
Last weekend, viewers in Phoenix and Tucson, as well as other markets across the country, saw an ad produced by the group Defense of Democracies attacking U.S. House members for not voting to pass the Senate's updated Protect America act, which the group claims has "crippled" U.S. anti-terrorism intelligence gathering efforts.
While the ad didn't specifically mention Democrats or Republicans in the House, the only markets that saw it were ones with Democratic members. At the end of the ad, the contact information for that market's House member was given, and the viewers were then urged to contact their representative and tell them to pass the Senate's version of the bill.
The vote - or rather, lack of vote - sparked a massive fight between Arizona Democrats and both the state and national Republican parties. The dispute remains unresolved, and will likely continue to be an object of contention in the House and on the campaign trail.
