When JD Hayworth lost his CD5 seat to Harry Mitchell in 2006 most expected not to see him run for office again unless he was taking a shot at the Governor’s office or maybe US Senate. If the latest rumor pans out, it may be sooner than that. And it may be for a Congressional seat again.
Hayworth is the flavor of the week for Republicans in the CD1 race. While the NRCC and many prominent state Republicans have been looking for someone besides Sydney Hay to run, Hayworth is probably a long shot. If Hayworth joins everyone else and passes too, then the party should be ready to rally around Hay because they are quickly running out of registered Republicans.

No and No!
Sorry to disappoint a previous poster, but no, there are no ethics issues swirling about...the Justice Department contacted my attorneys and in a two sentence statement basically said "there is no there." That's what I told them when I invited them to review 12 years worth of documents--and you better believe if something WAS there, they would have moved against me in a "New York nanosecond!"
No...no one contacted me about running in CD 1--and though I guess I should be flattered about being the subject of a rumor, the first I heard of it was Evan's call to my show this afternoon. BTW, Evan, you missed a great chance to plug your website! Sydney and Preston are both hardworking candidates, and I believe the conservative base in CD 1 will help keep the seat in Republican hands. Rural Democrats are conservative, and if B.O. is the Dem nominee, his disparaging comments about rural America will lengthen McCain's coattails in this vast rural district.
I don't get it
Why would this be good for Republicans? JD has ethics issues (hence his loss to Mitchell). Why would any Republican want him to run in CD1 where he would not only be tagged as a carpetbagger, but then also be considered Renzi-esque. With the scandals this last year, I would take my chances with Hay before "recruiting" JD.
Who recruited JD?
It appears there are some pretty busy bees in our great state. Rumor has it that Brian Murray, a former JD Hayworth and Rick Renzi staffer, is pushing his old boss, JD, to run for Renzi's seat. This makes total sense. Who else knows that district better than Murray? It's the perfect political move (for a consultant). Fact is, Murray was behind the recruitment of Ken Bennett for that seat and after Bennett backed out, Murray had to find another candidate to run. Voila! JD Hayworth.
