Dunn: 'The campaign has paid the expenses'

Tom Dunn, campaign spokesman for Tim Bee for Congress, is pushing back against demands by Pima Democrats that the campaign pay the costs incurred to the city of Tucson and Pima County due to the visit of Pres. Bush on Bee's behalf.

"The campaign has paid the expenses based on longstanding regulations," said Dunn in a statement. "The White House has a formula that has been in place since Reagan that has been adhered to by Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush."

Dunn's response came as prominent Pima County Democratic officials, including Pima County Board of Supervisors Chairman Richard Elias, Tucson Vice Mayor Karen Uhlich and Pima County Democratic Party Chairman Vince Rabago gathered at a press conference to demand the campaign reimburse the city and county the estimated $99,000 spent on law enforcement escorts for Bush's July 17 visit.

$562K for Giffords in 2Q; Bee still counting

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Tucson) raised $562,138 in the second quarter of the year, bringing her cash on hand total to almost $2.1 million, according to her campaign. Her opponent in the 8th Congressional District race, state Sen. Pres. Tim Bee (R-Tucson), will not be releasing his second quarter figures until Tuesday or Wednesday.

Giffords campaign chairman Michael McNulty noted in the release announcing the totals that last quarter's contributions came from 1,898 individual contributors, with the average contribution coming in at around $200.

"This tells me that the voters in our district know better than anyone else how tireless [sic] Congresswoman Giffords has been in advocating for Southern Arizona in the House of Representatives," McNulty was quoted as saying. "These Arizonans come from all walks of life, they care about the future and they want the kind of change and common sense solutions that Congresswoman Giffords is fighting for."

Sproul staying on Bee campaign

A report by RedArizona that Nathan Sproul is being relieved of his position as an adviser and fundraiser on state Sen. Tim Bee's campaign to unseat U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords(AZ-8) is unfounded, according to a spokesman for Bee.

"There's nothing to those reports," said Tom Dunn, Bee's communications director. Dunn told PolitickerAZ.com that Sproul, a former Arizona Republican Party chairman and past Arizona Christian Coalition leader, was remaining on the campaign, and that his position remains unchanged.

RedArizona reported Sproul's exit late Thursday night, quoting "sources close to the senator" as saying: "Nathan Sproul will not be playing a direct role in the campaign." The sources told RedState that Sproul was leaving to work for a ballot initiative, "Stop Hiring Illegals," that would overturn an employer-sanctions law that Bee helped pass.
