Nowakowski fights to keep funds flowing to Phoenix

Phoenix Councilman Michael Nowakowski spent the afternoon calling state legislators who represent his district at the state level, urging them not to include city-shared state revenue on the list of cuts the Legislature is reportedly considering to balance the budget.

"We've already taken a hit of $90 million," said Nowakowski, who worries that reductions in state funds going to Phoenix will mean even more severe reductions in services.

"If we take another hit now, we're talking major, major cuts" including programs for youth and seniors, and possibly police and fire personnel, according to Nowakowski. "It will really affect individuals in the poorest areas of town."

Lord picks up Nowakowski endorsement

Today Phoenix City Councilman Michael Nowakowski endorsed Bob Lord, Democratic candidate for the U.S. House seat in CD3.

Nowakowski, who represents Phoenix's 7th District, which includes downtown, has been expected to endorse Lord for weeks now. He is the second member of the Phoenix City Council to do so, after Dist. 6 councilman Greg Stanton endorsed him in February. Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon is also backing Lord.
