Poll: Goddard, Gordon top business owners' early picks for governor

Ariz. Attorney General Terry GoddardAriz. Attorney General Terry GoddardArizona small business owners overwhelmingly favor a Democrat to replace Gov. Janet Napolitano, according to the Silver State Bank/Arizona Small Business Association/O'Neil Associates Arizona Economic Indicators Monitor.

The poll, conducted among the ASBA's 3,000 members, found that 43 percent of respondents supported Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard in the hypothetical race. Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon came in second with 21 percent.

Rounding out the list were U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters (10 percent), Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman (8 percent), Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne (8 percent), state Treasurer Dean Martin (7 percent) and Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas (5 percent).

As Governor's tone is upbeat on budget, Treasurer sees bigger crisis looming

Even as today Governor Janet Napolitano signed the corrective legislation that came out of yesterday's whirlwind session, Martin warns that the state dodged a bullet, and that real disaster could be a mere two months away without swift and decisive action.

INTERVIEW WITH DEAN MARTIN: "Chicken Little...was right"

State Treasurer Dean Martin invoked the ire of Governor Janet Napolitano yesterday by announcing that the state would be flat broke by early May. Napolitano's office claims that Martin is "not privy to enough information to make accurate predictions," and that his is merely a "ministerial position." Now Martin tells Politicker AZ his side of the story, including his views on how the state got into this situation, how it can be fixed and how the answer isn't to "kill the messenger."

Treasurer Martin joins majority of Congressmen in urging Shadegg to stay

If Congressman John Shadegg decides to retire, one of the favorites for his seat would be State Treasurer Dean Martin.  Martin though would also be taking the biggest risk as he would need to resign his seat to run.  Martin is not entering the last year of his term, he is only in the first year as State Treasurer.   read more »

Two days ago, Rep. John Shadegg was the odds-on favorite to keep the 3rd District seat in Republican hands for an umpteenth straight term (when it was the 4th District, it had been in the GOP column since at least the Ford administration).  read more »

Treasurer Dean Martin mulling congressional run

Sources in contact with State Treasurer Dean Martin report that he is considering entering the race for the District 3 congressional seat being vacated by Rep. John Shadegg. According to the sources, Martin has been "inundated" with calls from supporters urging him to run.  read more »

Arizona GOP spokesman Tony Reinhard revealed three more who might be running for Rep. John Shadegg's seat:

- State Sen. Pamela Gorman (R-Anthem)

- State Treasurer Dean Martin

- Jordan Rose, founding partner of the Rose Law Group
