Arizona AFL-CIO endorses (almost) straight Democratic ticket

The Arizona chapter of the AFL-CIO, the country's largest federation of unions, released its list of endorsements in congressional and state races late Thursday night. It is a list that heavily favors Democratic candidates.

While some Democrats were left out - such as state House candidates Lamont Lovejoy in Legislative District 10 and Eve Nuñez in LD12 - only one Republican made it onto the list: Jon Altmann, running for state representative in LD11.

All eight Democratic congressional candidates in the state, plus the three Democrats running for Arizona Corporation Commission, were endorsed by the Arizona AFL-CIO as well.

Lord receives AFL-CIO endorsement

Arizona’s American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) announced its endorsement of Bob Lord for Congress Friday.

“I am truly honored to have the backing of Arizona's working families,” Bob Lord said. “Having Arizona's working families working with our campaign for change is incredibly important.”

The AFL-CIO union represents 165,000 union members and their families in Arizona.

AFL-CIO to protest outside McCain's office

On Thursday, members of the AFL-CIO will gather outside U.S. Sen. John McCain's Phoenix district office to protest the Bush administration's "coziness" with oil companies and demand an end to spending on Iraq.

"They will assert that President Bush is too cozy with big oil companies and has done nothing to check soaring gas prices," read the press release announcing the event. "They will call on President Bush and Senator John McCain to boost the economy and invest in jobs and energy independence rather than spending billions on the Iraq war - - a war that’s benefiting the oil industry. They will also call on Bush and McCain to end their support for tax breaks for big oil."
