Blackfire to Play Two Concerts for Howard Shanker’s Congressional Campaign

Flagstaff—August 15, 2008—The internationally acclaimed band Blackfire will be playing two community concerts for First Congressional District candidate Howard Shanker. The concerts are free, open to the public and appropriate for all ages. The first concert will be held in Camp Verde’s Butler Park on Sunday, August 24th at 5p.m.  The second concert will be held in the northeast Arizona town of Chinle on Saturday, August 30th, 6 p.m., at the Community Center.

Blackfire, a high-energy rock band, is made up of Navajo siblings Klee, Clayson, and Jeneda Benally. The Native American Music Awards recently declared Blackfire the “Group of the Year.” They have been featured on National Public Radio and the Oprah Winfrey Show.

Blackfire is encouraging members of the Navajo and Yavapai-Apache Nations to vote for Shanker in the September 2nd Democratic primary. Shanker has spent much of his law career protecting native rights. Most recently, he has been fighting to protect the sacred and environmentally sensitive San Francisco Peaks from the use of reclaimed sewer water to make artificial snow at the Snowbowl Ski Resort.
