Property Tax Repeal overcomes first hurdle, but still short in Senate

The Arizona House today voted to pass HB2220 which would permanently repeal the statewide property tax, but the bill is still one vote short in the Senate. The bill would permanently repeal the tax that was suspended by the legislature two years ago and in set to expire next year.

House Speaker Jim Weiers has said not passing this permanent repeal is the same as passing a $250 million tax increase. Democrats, led by Governor Janet Napolitano have said with the current budget shortfall, passing this legislation now is reckless.

While the Republicans control the State Senate, they are still 1 vote short. The Republicans hold a 17-13 advantage in the Senate, but with Tom O’Halleran and Carolyn Allen both in opposition of the bill, that leaves the bill at 15-15 and the Republicans still one vote short of passage.

The burden will now fall upon Senate President Tim Bee and his leadership team to work out a deal to find one more vote so they can send the bill to Janet Napolitano for her veto. Even if Bee cannot muster the last vote, look for him to force a vote on the floor so the Republicans can use the issue in the upcoming elections.
