PolitickerAZ has learned that State Sen. Charlene Pesquiera (D-26) will not run for reelection.
In a statement to supporters, Pesquiera explained:
"Many of you have asked and wondered about my political direction for re-election. With considerations to the personal sacrifices one makes while in public office, it is safe to say I have exceeded. Though it has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your Senator I do plan to finish the year and will step aside for another promising democratic candidate who will serve in the Senate for 09."
While Pesquiera was unavailable for comment, Lisa Markkula, Exec. Dir. of the Pima County Democratic Party, said that it is a shame to see Pesquiera go, "and we're thankful for her service."
Markkula wouldn't divulge details on the decision that led Pesquiera to decline re-entering the race for 26, but did say "we understand that service is a privilege and an honor, but also a challenge."
According to Markkula, there are "a number of very strong candidates" who might step up to run for the seat, but "it would be premature to name anyone." However, she did indicate that there may be a firmer field taking shape in the next few weeks.
