With Mitt Romney throwing his 286 delegates behind Sen. John McCain today, the Republican presidential frontrunner is now a mere 78 delegates shy of clinching the nomination.
However, his rival Mike Huckabee, who must win somewhere around 98% of the remaining delegates to take the nomination from McCain, has vowed to stay in the fight until the race is officially over.
That fight leads to Guam next on Saturday, followed by Wisconsin on Tuesday and American Samoa the Saturday after that. At stake are only 58 delegates, which means that, unless Huckabee drops out, McCain may have to wait until March 4, when Texas, Ohio, Vermont and Rhode Island go to the polls, to celebrate a complete victory. Yet barring some highly unlikely shift in the dynamics of the race, it appears now that on March 4, McCain will declare victory.
