Governor’s legal general counsel leaves to challenge Thomas
By Wally EdgeTim Nelson, who has served as the general counsel for the Governor and was regarded as a valuable inside member to Janet Napolitano’s team, is leaving to challenge Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas. Nelson, who has lived in Arizona for about a decade, should be well financed and could give Thomas a much tougher challenge than he faced in 2004 when he defeated Don Harris 58%-42%. While the Republicans control Maricopa County with a 34% to 29% registration advantage, independents now account for 37% of the registered voters in Maricopa County.
