Arizona Corporation Commissioner Kris Mayes has made it official: She will not be a candidate to replace Rep. Rick Renzi (R-1) in the 1st Congressional District.
“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of the people who worked so hard on my Congressional Exploratory Committee,” Mayes said in a statement. “In a month and a half, I received the endorsements of nearly 30 elected officials in CD-1 and raised nearly $90,000 with commitments for much more. I am truly honored and humbled by the outpouring of support that I received in such a short period of time.”
“This decision was an extremely difficult one,” Mayes continued. “But at the end of the day, I had to decide where I can best serve the people of the state that I love and have the most impact on public policy and right now, that is on the Commission.” That leaves Sydney Hay as the only official Republican candidate in the race as of now. Former State Senate President Ken Bennett is expected to announce whether he will run either today or tomorrow.
