Romley to make endorsement in Maricopa County attorney race

Former Maricopa County attorney Rick Romley announced Tuesday he will be making an endorsement in the race between current county attorney Andrew Thomas and challenger Tim Nelson.

"Initially, I did not have any intentions to endorse a candidate for the Maricopa County Attorney's race," said Romley in a press release. "However, this position is too important to our community. Many things are of great concern to me. I can no longer stay silent."

Romley, who served as county attorney from 1989 until his retirement from the office in 2004, won't announce who his pick is until Thursday morning, when he will make his decision public in a press conference outside the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.

When PolitickerAZ.com asked Romley why he was waiting to indicate his preference, he said, "I just want to do it all at once."

Romley's Endorsement

Rick Romley has fallen into the category of "has been" politician. Like so many, he had greater political ambitions and was not able to achieve them. He appears bitter and spiteful. Mr. Thomas has done what many politicians fail to do -- he followed through on his campaign promises. While many mocked his anti-illegal immigration campaign slogan, those voices were silenced by Mr. Thomas's actions. Rick Romley appears bitter and out of touch with his party. It's clear that he now needs the support of the Democratic establishment to once again gain a political post. His actions yesterday revealed a keen, self-serving political animal.

Bad Comparison

I could not agree more on Jimmy Carter. Carter is an idiot and anti-Semite and he has no conscious when paid. I could not agree less, however, on your comparison of Carter to Rick Romley. As a native Arizonan, I fondly remember Romley as tough on crime and a war hero.

Rick Romley is the Jimmy Carter of Arizona

Jimmy Carter spent the past 30 years trying to evade the
fact that he was no longer the President of the United
States and that his time in the spotlight was over. His
post-President legacy is of lending his name and former
high public office to supporting less and less worthy
causes and attempting to wrestle the microphone away
from later Presidents. Like Jimmy Carter, Rick Romley
simply cannot gracefully retire from public life and let
others take center stage. It is unfortunate that Romley
seeks to reinject himself into Arizona politics in a
futile attempt to make himself relevant again. Whoever
Romley endorses gains very little.

He is going to endorse

He is going to endorse Nelson and it is really not a big deal. He hates Thomas because he thinks Thomas and Arpaio kept him from getting a job in DC. Romley has gone out of his way to say bad things about Thomas because of his personal hatred. Romley is just looking to remain revelant by drawing it out and making it seem like a surprise to cross party lines.

Wow

If 50 is correct, this would be a huge development. Congrats to a true Arizona maverick -- Rick Romley -- for putting public good before partisanship. I've always respected his military service. Thank goodness of Rick Romley.

Rumors?

50+ year Republican: I guess you know something PolitickerAZ and I do not. Is Romely going to endorse Nelson? With all due respect, IF that happens, it's much, much bigger than you suggest. I've lived in Arizona for over 35 years and Rick Romley is greatly respected as an elder statement with huge influence on center-right Rs. I still don't believe he will endorse Nelson, but if he does ... watch out!

Rick Romley, former Republican

Well that's no surprise. Romley gradually moved over to the left the last few years, I'd be surprised if he hasn't switched his party registration over to Democrat by now. He's been only endorsing Democrats the last couple of years since he left office. A quick google search pulls up this article...http://sonoranalliance.com/?p=756
He never was much of a Republican, sort of squishy always wanting to please everyone. Considering how much he hates Arpaio, endorsing Nelson over Thomas is a no-brainer coming from this guy.
