Passions flare at post-debate debate in Phoenix

PHOENIX -- A bipartisan debate watch party became a proxy battleground for the campaigns of Sens. John McCain (R-Phoenix) and Barack Obama (D-Ill.), as tempers flared and representatives of the state's major parties spun their candidates' performances.

The event at Tom's Tavern in downtown Phoenix was billed as bipartisan, but the decision by the Arizona Republican Party to make it the official debate watch for its supporters resulted in a crowd that was heavily biased toward the Republican presidential nominee. McCain banners, buttons and handmade signs were in evidence throughout the room, making the near absence of representation for Obama all the more conspicuous.

Yet the senator from Illinois was cheered loudly by those in his contingent, at times drowning out the enthusiasm of McCain voters. Jeers and derisive comments toward the candidates - and their backers in the room - emerged frequently as well from both sides.

The atmosphere was charged as the debate ended and the event moved into its second phase: responses from the parties.

Randy Pullen, who chairs the Arizona Republicans, said it was a great debate compared with those of the past few cycles, but said Obama was on the defensive most of the night. Pullen further said that McCain's experience in foreign policy was evident, while Obama didn't demonstrate a similar mastery of the topic.

"It's the classic example of a show horse versus a workhorse," Pullen said.

Emily DeRose, the Arizona Democratic Party's communications director, shot back that Obama displayed judgment on the issues, which McCain did not.

DeRose met a volley of boos when she said McCain had shown "some of the most erratic behavior of any candidate of all time" during the past week, and said over the crowd, "We can agree without being disagreeable."

Presidential Debate

If Obama was on the defensive, it was because of McCain's demeaning, patronizing, rude and uncalled for attitude. McCain is a petty man with a petty mind and, since the Palin nomination, has amply displayed his p--s poor judgment and daily flip-flops. Taking credit for a bailout vote that was not yet taken is the height of McCain's stupidity. It's kind of like "Mission Accomplished". And then for McCain to blame Obama for the failed vote is pathetic!

Republicans -- booing and shouting down someone with an opposing view (hmmm isn't that a form of defensiveness?) doesn't make you right, it just makes you a boor.

If McCain can't behave like a gentleman in front of 25 million viewers, heaven help us when he is sequestered in what are supposed to be diplomatic talks behind closed doors!

The McCain campaign should learn something from George Bush's experience -- that saying something frequently and with emphasis and scorn for someone with an opposing view doesn't make you correct -- it just degrades your credibility when the truth is learned.

Actually, all McCain has to do to lose the election is just to keep showing his b--t!

Polls tell you what you pay to hear but...

Marketing sample of one:

I heard from someone who's never voted before and generally never paid much attention to politics (he's over 30 but under 40).

He watched the debate. He was surprised that Obama was both on the defensive as well as not having much of substance to say. This new voter (just registered) in no way will consider Obama after watching the recent debate. That's one for McCain.

I know this isn't a scientific sample and no, there's no political party paying for a poll here - its just one American who's decided this election is too important not to vote in.

In this case Pullen's partisan observation pretty much matches up to this newly registered voters impression of both candidates in the debate.
