Schweikert now official in AZ-5
By Evan Brown, PolitickerAZ.com ReporterFormer Maricopa County treasurer David Schweikert officially became the Republican Party's nominee for the 5th Congressional District seat Friday, and will face incumbent U.S. Rep. Harry Mitchell (D-Tempe) in the general election in November.
Schweikert's official victory comes as Susan Bitter Smith, another contender in the 5th district GOP primary, who came very close to edging out Schweikert in Tuesday's vote, publicly endorsed him as the Republican candidate.
Bitter Smith had been waiting for the results of the official ballot count before dropping out. Friday, however, an announcement appeared on her website that read:
"Now it appears that enough ballots have been counted to project a likely winner. Today, Susan announced her support of David Schweikert as the Republican nominee in Arizona's Fifth Congressional District election in November."
The concession ends what became a rancorous contest between the two in the final stretch of the primary campaign. Internal polls showed Bitter Smith and Schweikert in a dead heat going into the Sept. 2 vote, with the rest of the six-person field lagging significantly behind. It wasn't long after the race firmed up into a two-person contest that a war of words erupted in television ads, the media and mail pieces, with each candidate slamming the other on a host of issues.
In an email to supporters sent out Friday, however, Bitter Smith gave notice that those battles were in the past.
“I strongly urge voters to support our nominee," Bitter Smith wrote. "He is ready to take on Harry Mitchell and the string of broken promises he made to get elected two years ago. Voting for David is the best chance voters in the District have to secure the border, reduce gas prices and cut taxes and eliminate wasteful spending to balance the budget.”

I am not sure whose comment you were reading but it must not have been mine... I never expressed any support for our current governor. I did not attack John McCain in any way. I actually paid him a compliment. In another post I said he will hurt races down ticket because he will be so far ahead come election day that some of the GOP will stay home in Arizona.
We all know the dems behind closed doors know they have no chance at the presidential race in Arizona. They will be focusing on down ticket races from the beginning like Mitchell and Giffords and that is why they both will be re-elected.
Also I love how you did not respond to any of my comments. Like how McCain was going to help 3-5 points and Schweikert would have a narrow victory but would not need those 3-5 points. So I ask you again how does that make sense?
I assume you are not challenging how Mitchell has been bi-partisian in Congress and has actually gotten a lot done, from his new GI bill, to voting against the budget, and keeping taxes low.
And lastly how badly the GOP has hurt itself by having a late primary and only allowing it self 60 days to run a general election against Mitchell...
With all the substance I just mentioned (something you have not done at all by the way) I repeat my prediction 53-47 Mitchell Wins.
Schweikert for Congress
Anti-Maverick...slam on our senior Senator I assume? Schweikert will defeat Mitchell by 5-6 points. I have been on the loosing end of coattails and the dynamics of this race is shaping up to prove the same.
Our Arizona races have all the makings of significant gains in the legislature for the GOP and another setback for Janet. Even Tim Bee will be close - yet, his race is far from a sure thing. You forget the GOP voter registration advantage in CD5.
Mr/Mrs.Anti-Maverick - I will just call you Pat. Pat, you and this Governor have attacked our Senator, John McCain once too often. I somewhat respected her "bi-partisan" appearance, yet she emerged into this full scale - even uglier than normal partisan attack dog.
This will not help her future US Senate run after she appoints lightweight Grant Woods to fill the unexpired Senate term of President-elect McCain.
Congressman Jeff Flake will kick his and then Janet's rump. Flake is no Matt Salmon and McCain will gladly campaign for him as Prez and return the favor in spades.
Media Alert:
1)Schweikert by 5-6% points
2) Three additional GOP seats in AZ house and one GOP seat in state Senate
3) Janet’s stock will plummet due to GOP gains. Discipline will rule GOP caucuses and Janet will be out - along with her 70's hair style!

So Schweikert is going to win a narrow victory and get a 3-5 point bounce from McCain but won't need it... How does that make any sense??
A narrow victory would make it sound like he is going to need those 3-5 points... One might even say he must get those 3-5 points according to your "analysis."
Mitchell is going to be able to show how bipartisan he has been in his two years in Congress. How he has helped vets (Webb-Mitchell GI Bill), fought to keep taxes low (introduced bill to make capital gains tax cut permanent)and cut government spending (voted against the Democratic budget every time).
Schweikert will do what he can with his Club for Growth Money but in the end it won't matter. The GOP killed it self by making the primary so late. Only allowing their candidate 2 months to have a general election campaign and raise money in really will hurt them.
Mitchell by 6% 53-47... mark my words.
Schweikert for Congress
I believe David Schweikert will narrowly win this race. JD Hayworth turned into an arrogant bully and very unlikable, even among loyal republicans. This is decidedly a GOP district and Harry Mitchell will fall to the mild mannered and fiscal conservative David Schweikert.
McCain/Palin will add 3-5% points to every GOP candidate in Arizona...mark my words. David doesn't need those 3-5% points, yet will ensure my prediction.
