David Schweikert will win the 5th Congressional District Republican primary, PolitickerAZ.com projects.
With 97.6 percent of precincts reporting, Schweikert tops the six-person field with just under 30 percent of the vote. Susan Bitter Smith, who has kept pace with him throughout the night, currently has 28 percent of the vote, but it will not be enough to overcome Schweikert's lead.
Schweikert, who served as Arizona House majority leader and Maricopa County treasurer, will go on to face U.S. Rep. Harry Mitchell (D-Tempe) in the general election.
Schweikert and Bitter Smith were the front runners throughout the counting, leading the rest of the field by double-digit margins. Former state Rep. Laura Knaperek came closest with over 15 percent of the vote, followed by state Rep. Mark Anderson (R-Mesa) with 13.6 percent, Jim Ogsbury at just under 12 percent and Lee Adam Gentry with a point-and-a-half.

I was disappointed with Lee
I was disappointed with Lee Adam Gentry's vote totals. I met him outside a Safeway in Scottsdale and he shared with me his vision for what a Congressperson should do as well as shared with me his interesting background. I think he would have been a great Republican candidate but I didn't see enough buzz around his candidacy. He should have reached out more to our district's average voter.
Oh well.
Better luck next time.
Why should I?
Why should I be satisfied with a nominee that will not represent my values? If McCain had picked Lieberman for his VP the way he wanted should I just have been a good republican and fallen in?? That is one of the worst arguments someone can make, just follow blindly it will all work out...
Also Roger Maris, I love how my accusations are half-truths and misrepresentations but you do not go into any detail as to how that is. Maybe that is because they are true...
Also Roger I am not sure why you mentioned baby killer Susan she is not the one I was supporting here, the woman has basically the same positions as Mitchell on everything so there I completely agree with you.
Schweikert has to show me he can raise some money in the district (not just club for growth) to compete with Mitchell before I will even waste my time debating if I can support him...
Anonymous, shut it!
Schweikert is the Republican nominee. Why don't you be a good Republican and stop your whining. Mitchell is the target now, not fellow Republicans....
Dear Anonymous 23, IF you
Dear Anonymous 23,
IF you truly cared about the Republican Party you would stop bashing David Schweikert. Your accusations are half-truths and misrepresentations.
Lastly... Susan Bitter-Smith is a RINO and would have destroyed the GOP chances in this district for years to come...
The ball is in your court now as Schweikert has won the primary... Time for you to step up and stop your whining...
Well at least AZ-5
Well At least AZ-5 got a couple things right. They rejected baby killer Susan and her lobbyist ties, and lifetime lobbyist Jim Ogsbury finished 5th! He could not even beat Mark Anderson, glad to see he did all that knocking his message really resonated...
Too bad though a real conservative could not break through in this field like Mark Anderson or Laura Knaperek... I don't know if I can support someone who was endorsed by the AFL-CIO twice, double charged people for property taxes, and mercilessly attacked fellow republicans...
