Congressional candidate David Schweikert: Campaign photoDavid Schweikert, candidate in the 5th Congressional District Republican primary, is taking heat from the Arizona Democratic Party over his latest Federal Election Commissions report, which the campaign filed late. While Democrats claim it's part of a "disturbing" pattern, the Schweikert campaign blamed a technical error.
"Congressional candidate David Schweikert violated commonly understood Federal Elections Commissions rules this week by failing to meet the July 15 filing deadline for the second quarter," read an Arizona Democratic Party release. "Schweikert was the only District Five candidate to break the rules, and now faces thousands of dollars in potential fines."
They also pointed out that Schweikert received six "Notice of Failure to File" warnings from a previous congressional run.
However, neither Schweikert's campaign nor the Democrats are sure whether the candidate will actually be forced to pay any penalties for filing late this time.
Emily Bittner, Arizona Democratic Party communications director, told PolitickerAZ.com that whether Schweikert will be forced to pay fines isn't the point.
"It's disturbing that someone touting his managerial credentials would make such a basic mistake," said DeRose. David Schweikert is running largely based on his tenure as treasurer of Maricopa County.
Bill Connor, who is Schweikert's campaign manager, admitted the mistake but called it a "non-issue."
"It really was 13 minutes late," Connor told PolitickerAZ.com. "They had a problem transmitting over the Internet. They had started to transmit before the midnight deadline, and I don't know what happened, but whatever happened happened right there at the deadline."
Connor was fatalistic about the specter of a government fine.
"If the FEC wants to levy a civil penalty, it is what it is," he said.

Hair ye, hair ye
And does he know how much of a carbon footprint all that hairspray leaves behind? One other thing -- Eddie Munster called; he wants his widow's peak back.
If you don't look good, we don't look good
Is it true that David Schweikert spends $300-$400 to get his hair done at Vidal Sassoon in Scottsdale?
Really, 13 minutes late?!
Really, 13 minutes late?! Ugggh! We should be pouring our time and energy into saving our economy and making it affordable to drive to work and eat lunch! This is 10 minutes of my life I'll never get back.... thanks Emily DeRose! Go Schweikert!!!
Bret Weir
Bret, why don't you answer the other points that were listed by True GOP? You can't just answer 1 out of 8 of his points and than accuse him of being in the gutter. Answer to the other 7 pts and lets go from there.
Wrong crowd
PaulKirk...
The Schweikert donors dont read AZ blog pages. They are all from out of state!!
ATTENTION SCHWEIKERT DONORS
Maybe you can petition the IRS to have your donation made tax deductible, as are other contributions to reduce the Federal debt. Don't you have a great feeling knowing that your contribution to Schweikert just went straight to the bureaucracy in Washington?
Schweikert has nice hair
If Schweikert spent as much time using his brain as he did combing his hair, he might have a chance in this race. Ogsbury has already knocked on more doors and released a balanced budget. Schweikert can't even file his paperwork? What did Schweikert do as tax collector when people filed late?
It it what it is?
He says, " It is what it is..." Sounds like someone that is spending someone else's hard earned money and not their own. I happen to be not bad off myselfe, but I make every effort to conserve every penny I can. Like Lincoln said, a penny saved is a penny earned. Dave and his staffers don't think like Lincoln, do they?
I wonder if Schweikert plans to spend the tax payers money so nonchalantly. Oh ya, of course he does. He voted to raise taxes before and was endorsed by the pro-tax, AFL-CIO.
I think any teenager with a
I think any teenager with a credit card knows bankruptcy is only on your record for seven years Bret. And if your relying on a website to provide you with up to date records don't hold your breath. Also, any refutes for my other legitimate concerns? I challenge you to disprove them.
This guy is protected by the Club for Growth because they didn't do their research. If they had they would realize they're supporting a mismanager and an endorsee of the AFL-CIO. All I've heard in this race is this guy is the frontrunner and if you can't hold up to my factual scrutiny (It's all out there) you don't stand a chance against Harry Mitchell. We need a representative that is not a liberal pawn.
Unfortunately for this
Unfortunately for this lunatic, the clerk of the Federal Bankruptcy Court reveals absolutely no filing by David Schweikert in any form.
Looks like someone's about to get down in the gutter.
Try it again... when and if you come up with something that isn't spun from whole cloth.
Wait until Harry Mitchell gets a hold of this guy's record
David Schweikert is a numbers guy so let's put this in terms so he can read it.
His idea of a streamlined County Treasurer's Office:
1. Getting his entire department audited
2. Double-billing hardworking homeowners on
their property taxes.
3. A record of inexcusable mismanagement.
Top that off with:
4. The treasurer's office is mailing checks
dated in June with Mr. Schweikert's
signature (he resigned in January),
5. Bankruptcy.
6. Late FEC filings
7. A suspect voting record in the
legislature including votes to raise gas
prices.
8. And the cherry - an endorsement
by the liberal AFL-CIO.
David, in numbers that all equals the kind of leadership that has put Republicans behind the eight-ball this year. I'll pass.
What I don't understand is,
What I don't understand is, why did Schweikert release his projected total early, and then wait until he was late to file?
Is anyone else worried that Schweikert, the former Maricopa County Treasurer overspent his budget the last time he ran for Congress and had to file Chapter 11? I guess he knows numbers....
