Tim Nelson and Gerald Richard, the two Democrats contending to face Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas on the November ballot, have agreed to square off at a series of four events throughout July.
The campaigns of Nelson and Richard confirm that their first meeting will occur at the Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe on July 8. That will be followed by an appearance on the Channel 8 show Horizon on July 14, a League of Women Voters-sponsored debate on July 29 - likely at Phoneix College - and an event hosted by the Foothills Democrats on July 31.
The issue of debates was a source of contention for the two campaigns recently. An invite for the League of Women Voters event had gone out to both candidates, but was lost in Gerald Richard's personal e-mail for some time, leading to a back-and-forth exchange wherein each campaign accused the other of avoiding debates.
Both sides at the time expressed a desire to go head-to-head, and now that this slate of events has been agreed to, they will finally get their chance.

Get your fact straight.. EVER public appearance that Tim and Gerald was suppose to attend... it was Tim that backed down from making a public appearance with him. So much so that his campaign manager (the former Nader guy from Illinois, Josh) has had to "calm" Tim down on the phone outside several events. Precinct Committee folks have said this time and time again to volunteers of Gerald's
And tell me this whole thing about experience? Look at the mission statement of the office... and contract the experience with the mission statement.
I can't wait to see these debates. They will be fair and really show the experience. Maybe we can get them online for a wider audience to see?
Too bad prosecuting felony
Too bad prosecuting felony criminal cases isn't something the County Attorney does himself. Somebody needs to inform Gerald Richard and his supporters that it may not be good election strategy to run on experience that is irrelevant to the office.
Fire Andrew Thomas
Both Mr. Richards and Mr. Nelson have excellent personal histories. Mr. Nelson has been actively involved in the practice of law for decades. Mr. Richards has spent most of his career as a bureaucrat in the city police department. Criminal law is only a small part of the practice of law and we should not overlook the civil arena in which the County Attorney must also perform. Tim Nelson is better prepared to oversee a law practice than Mr. Richards.
Too bad none of Tim Nelson's
Too bad none of Tim Nelson's experience involves prosecuting felony criminals. Too bad he has no experience managing a major law enforcement agency.
Gerald Richard has proven experience prosecuting the dangerous criminals that threaten our safety. Gerald Richard has proven leadership skills from managing an agency four times the size of the County Attorney's office.
I hear Nelson has been quietly asking prosecutors what it takes to run the County Attorney's office. Gerald Richard already knows.
This debate is an excellent
This debate is an excellent opportunity for each candidate to demonstrate their talents and vision for the office. While both have their unique backgrounds, I believe Tim Nelson has the experience and skill necessary to restore a sense of dignity and reverence to the Office of the County Attorney.
Oh good. I like Tim Nelson's
Oh good. I like Tim Nelson's litigation experience and background as a state enforcer. I'll be cheering him on.
Glad to see so many
Glad to see so many politically active people on this board! I'm going with Tim in this election. I've been opposite him in the courtroom and he's exactly what we need! He's smart, and has character!
Both are great candidates,
Both are great candidates, and the Dems should be excited! Gotta go with Tim Nelson because of the experience factor!
Finally!
Richard FINALLY agreed to debate Nelson! I look forward to seeing this!
