Fight over qualifying signatures goes to court

Congressional candidate Mary Kim Titla: Campaign photoOn Friday, the Maricopa County Superior Court will hear arguments on whether to include or expunge hundreds of signatures gathered by state Sen. Albert Hale (D-Window Rock), state Rep. Albert Tom (D-Chambers) and 2nd Legislative District House candidate Chris Deschene, on the basis that the signatories gave post office boxes for their addresses.
At a press conference outside the Capitol, 1st Congressional District candidate Mary Kim Titla was joined by Native American activists, former 3rd Congressional District candidate Annie Loyd and Arizona Democratic Party officials to denounce the challenges as discriminatory toward Native Americans, many of whom live on reservations and don't have physical addresses recognized by the U.S. Postal Service.
"Every single one of them does have a physical address," said Tupac Enrique Acosta, who is director of the Phoenix-based Tonatierra Community Development Institute. Acosta said the post office is to blame for not finding a better way to handle addresses on reservations. "These discrepancies have existed... since Arizona and New Mexico were territories," he said.
Acosta and the others claim that some counties, including Pinal and Apache, have accepted signatures with P.O. box addresses, and hope Maricopa County will do the same. Although the sprawling 2nd Legislative District stradles numerous counties in the north of the state - none of them Maricopa - the petition challenges will be heard in Maricopa County because it is where the petitions were filed.
While Sen. Hale's petition is being challenged by his Republican rival Royce Jenkins, the challenges to Rep. Tom and Deschene come from Mark Haughwout, who is running in the LD2 House Democratic primary. Maria Weeg, executive director of the Arizona Democratic Party, acknowledged that defending Tom and Deschene was in effect interfering in the primary, but said the party couldn't remain on the sidelines.
"In general we do stay out of primaries," said Weeg. "This, it's a bit mean-spirited. It's like he's going after a whole culture. It's so contrary to the principles of the Democratic Party it's not something we can support."
Mark Haughwout called the idea that he was assaulting Native culture "nonsense," and asserted that his challenges "don't revolve around the post office issue."
"The county recorders already have more than enough to take [Rep. Tom] off the ballot," said Haughwout, who claims Tom's petition was rife with Republicans and people not eligible or registered to vote.
"The whole purpose of the nominating process is to meet with voters and get them to nominate you," continued Haughwout. "He just really didn't give it a sound effort."

A Real Candidate
AGAIN, Shanker is helping 13 tribes in Arizona.If you read, then you might find out what he's done for us, and everyone, not just family members. What has Mary Kim done for you, look around the rez. I heard she says she helps us "POOR" Indians, I heard she has done "SO MUCH" for us, I heard she goes around and "CLAIMS" she does many good things for us. If you really believe it, get your head out of the clouds. She became VERY well-known in the 80's, and done nothing! Nothing! During Rodeo Chediski she helped the white people of White Mountains more than the Apaches. When has she ever spoken-up for us. THE ONLY TIME SHE SPEAKS UP FOR US IS WHEN SHE GETS PAID TOP $$ at UNITY. She has never done anything, but PROMOTE herself, and her family. Tell me one good thing she has done. By the way, you need to check your grammar. Also, she does not speak her language, I might be an Urban Indian, but I can speak my language, and I know my culture.

Cheap shots urban indian. You speak badly of Mary Kim Titla because you support shankers campaign and shankers campaign benefits after a lawyer friend gives shanker a big donation and takes someone to court over his signatures. Your comments make it look like shanker is demanding payback from the navajo for his PAID work because he deserved more than they paid him. Support Mary Kim Titla.
Well, its about time Mary
Well, its about time Mary Kim advocates on behalf of her people, how many years did it take for her to do that? I think about 27 years. Some of our issues were small problems back in the 1980's, noone even tried to do anything about our Indian problems, but finally someone, it seems like for their own convenience is going to do something. So, now that Shanker is doing some representing for the Native people, she has decided to pay attention to us. Some of us have been helping our people without being paid "TOP" money for so many years.

It's my understanding that many people who live on the reservation have no physical address, they've never been assigned one by the postal service. Should that be the case people who live on the reservation are being disenfranchised and that's a shame. But again, the real shame is that Mark Haughwout is using an old but not uncommon trick in challenging signatures so that he can run unchallenged.

If you attempt to run for office, simple rules for petitions apply. Follow them. It states at the top of the petition column physical address. These candidates didn't due their due diligence in collecting signatures and it has nothing to do with their native status.

Outrageous
I don't know Mark Haughwout but his actions stink of political opportunism. And what's worse is his actions are at the expense of peoples who have been undeserved and underrepresented for generations. Should such a blatant political stunt succeed I can only imagine the "warm" reception Haughwout will receive when he goes looking for votes from the very people he systematically attempted to disenfranchise. Unless part of his cold calculation is to disregard them at together. What a shame.
