Gas prices remain forefront issue of House races
By Evan BrownThe National Republican Congressional Committee has called on U.S. Reps. Harry Mitchell (D-Tempe) and Gabrielle Giffords (D-Tucson) to denounce "socialist" comments by a Democratic House member, as Giffords voiced her support for a bill to encourage oil companies to use exisiting leases of government lands.
At a press conference Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-N.Y.) said, "Should the people of the United States own oil refineries? Maybe so." He claimed he thought it was a "good idea" at the time, though Hinchey admitted later in a FOX News interview that he doesn't think the idea will fly.
The NRCC followed up by challenging Reps. Giffords and Mitchell to "weigh in on this newest proposal to socialize America’s energy industry."
"While Mitchell/Giffords and Democrats in Washington are busy tearing pages out of Hugo Chavez’s socialist playbook, the American people are hurting at the pump," read the release put out by NRCC spokesman Ken Spain.
The release also cited a Rasmussen poll that showed 67 percent of the public backs increased offshore drilling, though another Rasmussen poll indicates that a majority of Americans also either support nationalizing the oil industry or are not sure whether or not it's a good idea.
Rep. Giffords had her own statement on oil prices and drilling, coming out in favor of two bills, one cosponsored by U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Tucson), that seek to expand domestic oil production without opening up new federal lands. The bills would punish oil companies for not drilling on land they've already leased, one by establishing "incentive fees" to prod them into using the land, and one that would deny further leases to companies that hold leases they aren't using.
According to Giffords, almost 68 million acres of land and offshore areas have been leased for oil production and refining but are lying fallow.
"It is outrageous that oil companies are sitting idle on what could be vast reserves of oil while American consumers are spending more each day to fill up their tanks," said Giffords in a statement. Giffords said oil companies need to "use [the land] or lose it."
