April 1, 2008 (Flagstaff, AZ)—While the Howard Shanker for Congress press office did not release the campaign’s first quarter fundraising total, it did release numbers indicating the breadth of support the campaign has found in Arizona and across the nation. In the first quarter of 2008, which concluded on March 31, the Shanker Congressional campaign boasted that it had received support from nearly two hundred and fifty individual donors. While many of the donors are residents of Arizona’s First Congressional District, the campaign also attracted coast-to-coast attention, with support for Shanker taking root in California, Connecticut, Florida, and everywhere in between.
Treasurer of the campaign, Tamera Shanker, said the campaign would not immediately release its dollar total, as checks mailed during the last week of March were still arriving at the campaign office. She said she would be filing an official quarter report with the FEC by April 15. Howard Shanker referenced the broad base of donors in the first quarter of the year as evidence of his campaign’s success. “I think it’s clear that this is a campaign of the people,” said Shanker. “We may not be leading in total number of dollars grossed, but I think an even more important indicator is breadth of support. We’re moving full steam ahead.”
